Salmisaari pellet-fired heating plant K6 uses wood pellets as fuel for district heat production. Located in Helen Ltd's Salmisaari power plant site in central Helsinki, the heating plant's architecture is inspired by the surrounding, densely built red brick industrial architecture. It is clearly of its time but fits in with the surrounding traditional industrial townscape.
The district heat plant is located on a narrow site between Tallberginkatu and the chimney of the old Salmisaari A power plant. Functional and logistical requirements have guided the spatial and layout solutions. Flue gases are directed to the old, high brick chimney of the Salmisaari A power plant. Vertical windows bring natural light into the boiler hall, increasing comfort and safety.
The building has a steel frame, and its street facades consist of brick-faced concrete sandwich panels. Part of the brick cladding consists of decorative masonry, with the brick ends projecting from the rest of the façade. Together with the rhythmic window distribution, this reduces the scale of the whole and adds a variety of light and shadows to the industrial façade.
